Having received the assignment to write a synthesis essay, a student can use some ideas or concepts from two or more sources in order to write something new and different. The information that students present should be clear and concise. Besides, a reader should not find it hard to understand the ideas and see how exactly they relate to each other.
There are two major kinds of synthesis:
1. Background synthesis (provides only a topic overview and may not introduce any new ideas).
2. Thesis synthesis (introduces new ideas from the used materials; presents some ideas that can be rather controversial).
Steps of how to write a synthesis essay:
1. Investigate your topic
Start preparation by gathering ideas from different sources. Afterwards, use these ideas to develop your own thoughts and concepts. When working on sources, make sure they relate to the chosen topic. Make a careful study of what other researchers have said on this topic. Take notes while reading. To facilitate the process of structuring the ideas, you may write a short summary of each source you use. It will come in handy when you need to compare and contrast the sources. After you have gathered all the necessary information, think about the materials and ideas. At this stage, you are most likely to generate your own ideas and create something new.

2. Develop your ideas
When thinking how to write a thesis, consider the questions that were not answered or some ideas that were not addressed to in the sources, which you have researched. Make sure the idea you suggest in the thesis is the starting point of your paper. Actually, it should be a kind of a backbone, which centers all other ideas around. To provide a successful and effective essay, think of a strong structure. To organize the essay better, create an outline. Besides, whenever you are citing information from some outside sources, check whether you reference them properly.
3. Work on your structure
Your essay should provide information clearly and consistently. Ensure logical paragraph development. Whenever you are developing your argument, make sure you have the required structure: supporting sentences and examples. Give a clear introduction with a thesis statement. Then, go on developing the main ideas. At the end of the essay, do not forget to provide a concise conclusion, which briefly summarizes the principal discussed questions.
All in all, having conducted some research and used some creativity, you can successfully synthesize ideas of other researchers and develop your own. Do not forget to give proper citations and state when you don’t agree with some ideas. Good luck with your writing!
