Safety Tips for Your Online Job Search

There are multiple job boards online that have made it much easier for job seekers to come across a good position. However, they also made it easier for fraudsters to come up with counterfeit job offers and profit from those who’re looking for a job. But if you are attentive enough, you can spot these frauds. Read our tips and follow them to avoid the troubles!

Job Scams & Safety Tips

1. Analyze the Offer. If the offer you see appears too good to be true or something seems to be wrong with it, be cautious or back off completely.
2. Beware of Money Order & Check Frauds. Here is how the situation might turn if you deal with a scammer. You get a fake money order or check and are asked to deposit it in your bank account. Then you have to forward a part of your fund to the scammer via a money transfer service. So, be cautious if you get any offers like that!
3. Research Each Company. Look through their website thoroughly and google the company’s name along with such words as ‘scam’, ‘fraud’, ‘complaints’, ‘reviews’, etc. Be sure to do this research before you give the company any of your personal data.
4. Consider These Red Flags and Beware:
• Being hired without an interview or a personal meeting
• Finding multiple misspellings and errors in the job description or your written communication with the recruiter
• Being asked to provide your credit card, PayPal or bank account numbers or your personal information, such as your Social Security Number
• Being asked to give any payment or transfer money by courier or any wire service
• Being offered a reward or payment for allowing to use your bank account
• Receiving a large check
• Being promised a big salary for little work (including part-time job, internship, or entry-level position)
• Having to pay upfront fees
• Being asked to provide the copy of your ID to “verify your identity”
• Noticing that the company’s email address doesn’t match the website domain or that the job description concentrates on the money reward rather than the required skills of the applicant
5. Also, Mind the Following Tips:
• Proceed with caution in case any upfront fees are included in the offer
• Don’t apply for offers for mystery shoppers, virtual bookkeepers or administrative assistants
• In case any business trips are listed in the offer, see if travel expenses or outspoken program fees are included
• Compare the benefits offered by the company with similar opportunities offered by others
• See if the URL given in the job description is valid and matches the organization that offers the job
• Carefully read privacy policies on online job systems to consider any additional recommendations to avoid scam
